Square Appointments is a capable general booking and payments tool, and a lot of groomers start there because they already use Square for card payments. It books appointments and it takes money, both reliably.
What it does not do is know that your client has four legs.
Where they differ
On booking, records, reminders, no-show protection and reviews, both platforms cover the ground. The decision is made elsewhere.
A general booking tool stores a customer and a time slot. Grooming needs more: the dog, its breed and coat, how it behaves with a dryer, its vaccination status, what was done last visit, and a service duration that differs between a full groom and a nail trim.
SmartGroom is built the other way round. The pet is the record: breed, coat notes, behaviour, vaccination history and past grooms, held against the appointment you are about to do.

Switching software costs you a weekend and some risk. It is not worth doing unless the reason is real.
If your till, your card reader and your books are all Square, leaving is a bigger job than it looks.
A general tool at a low entry cost is a sensible place to begin. Come back when booking messages start interrupting you.
